Our cruise ship will dock at Halong cruise port for one day and we’re wondering if it’s possible to visit Hanoi during that time.
We’ve never been to Vietnam before and would love to see places if possible.
Is a day trip to Hanoi from Halong cruise port realistic? How long does the drive usually take?
Yes, it’s possible, but it will be a long day. The drive from Halong cruise port to Hanoi usually takes around 2.5 to 3 hours each way depending on traffic.
Many cruise passengers still choose to do this as a private shore excursion.
If you go, it’s best to book a private car and guide so you can maximize your time in Hanoi. Most tours visit the Old Quarter, Hoan Kiem Lake, and sometimes the Temple of Literature.
Would there still be enough time to explore the city, or is it mostly just time spent driving?
You’ll usually have around 4–5 hours in Hanoi depending on your ship schedule. It’s not enough to see everything, but you can still experience the Old Quarter, try some local food, and see a few highlights.
That sounds doable. We may consider a private tour then. Thanks for the helpful information!
