Has anyone taken a private car to Hanoi and back during a shore excursion? I'm worried about the traffic and missing the ship.
Don't worry, tons of passengers do this every time a ship docks. The travel time is roughly 2.5 to 3 hours each way via the highway.
Most drivers will drop you off right in the Hanoi Old Quarter. If you just want to get a feel for the city and wander around the streets, you don't really need a guide. However, if you want to visit specific historical sites, I’d recommend booking a tour with a guide so you don't waste time getting lost or lose track of your schedule.
The gangway usually closes 30 minutes before departure, so make sure you plan to be back at the pier well before that!
It's fine, but don't leave Hanoi between 4 PM and 8 PM. That’s rush hour and the traffic is a nightmare. Once you're on the highway, it's a 3-hour drive. Just leave Hanoi early and you’ll be safe!
