My cruise ship, Celebrity Solstice, will dock in Halong Bay from 7:00 am until 2:00 pm the next day.
I’m thinking about spending the night in Hanoi instead of returning to the ship that evening.
Is that allowed? I’m not sure if passengers are required to return to the cruise overnight or if we can stay outside the ship.
Yes, that’s actually a great idea if you want to spend more time exploring Hanoi. Many cruise passengers do this when their ship stays overnight in Halong.
You could spend the first day exploring Hanoi, or even take a Halong Bay day cruise in the morning and then go straight to Hanoi to stay overnight.
Just keep in mind that the gangway normally closes at 11:30 pm, and it usually reopens about 30 minutes later for late returning passengers.
On the departure day, the gangway usually closes about 30 minutes before the ship leaves. If your ship departs at 2:00 pm, the gangway will likely close around 1:30 pm.
Because the drive from Hanoi to Halong can take around 2.5–3 hours, you should plan to leave Hanoi no later than 9:30 am to be safe.
Leaving around 9:00 am would be even better in case of traffic.
That sounds perfect. Spending one night in Hanoi seems like a great option. Thanks for the helpful advice!
