Passport Photo Requirement for Cruises

Hi everyone, I just booked a 2-night cruise in Ha Long Bay. The agency is asking me to send a photo of my passport via WhatsApp/Email. Is this standard practice in Vietnam? I’m a bit hesitant to share such sensitive information online. Has anyone else had to do this?

@dennis-nill If your agency was reputable. Go ahead

I totally get your concern, but don't worry—it’s actually a mandatory legal requirement.

The cruise lines must submit the passenger manifest to the Ha Long Bay Management Board and the Port Authority for overnight registration. Without your passport details, they literally cannot let you board the boat. It’s also used for your mandatory travel insurance during the trip.

Just make sure you're dealing with a reputable agency. If you want to be extra safe, you can add a small watermark to the photo saying: 'For Ha Long Bay Cruise registration only - [Date]'. This prevents the image from being used for anything else while still providing the necessary info for the authorities. Enjoy your trip, the bay is stunning!

I got the same concern when I was there but it's true. Before departure, we had to wait for approval from management board
