I’ll be stopping at Halong Bay on a cruise soon.
I’m planning to explore on my own but a bit worried about timing.
What are the most common mistakes people make there?
The most common mistake is going too far from the port
Places like Hanoi or Ninh Binh are possible, but they are far and can make your schedule very tight
Many people don’t realize how long the journey actually feels in real traffic. Not factoring in traffic is another big mistake. Travel time on maps is only a reference. Delays can happen anytime. Even a small delay can cause stress when you’re trying to get back to the ship
A lot of passengers also don’t understand how the gangway works. The gangway usually closes about 30 minutes before departure time. If you arrive after that, you won’t be allowed to board
Another mistake is relying on random taxis outside the port. Some drivers may overcharge or take longer routes.
Communication can also be difficult if there’s a language barrier.
To stay safe, keep your plan simple, allow enough buffer time, and always prioritize getting back early.
That’s exactly what I needed. I’ll keep things simple. Thanks!
