Smoking on Halong Bay cruise, what’s actually allowed?

Hi everyone,

I’m planning a trip to Halong Bay later this year.

This might sound a bit odd, but smoking is quite important to me, so I wanted to ask in advance is smoking allowed on the cruise?

Any advice for heavy smokers would be really appreciated.

Thanks!

Officially, smoking in public indoor spaces is restricted in Vietnam.

But in reality, it’s still quite common in certain areas, especially outdoors 😆 😆

It really depends on whether you’re doing a day cruise or an overnight cruise.

On day boats, people usually smoke in outdoor areas like the back of the boat or on the top deck

If you go to the back of the boat (deck 1), there’s often an open corridor where crew members also work.
It’s a common spot for smoking, but just be mindful, it can be close to operational areas like the engine access

On overnight cruises, smoking inside cabins is strictly not allowed. There are smoke detectors, so definitely don’t try it

If you’re a heavy smoker, I’d recommend booking a cabin with a private balcony or even better, a terrace.
Terraces are ideal since you won’t disturb others much.
Balconies are smaller, so smoke can drift to neighboring rooms

Smoke in designated outdoor areas like the sundeck or certain sections near the restaurant. Just pay attention to the wind direction so you don’t bother other guests

Most cruises are quite relaxed about smoking as long as you’re respectful and stay in the right areas. Just avoid enclosed spaces and you should be fine
