I’m planning a 1 day trip to Lan Ha Bay but I’m not sure whether I should depart from Cat Ba Island or from Halong Harbor.
Are there big differences between the two options? Which one would you recommend? Thanks a lot!
If you depart from Cat Ba, you’ll usually get more flexible options. There are shorter tours 5–6 hours, full-day trips, speedboat tours, or even just beach focused activities. It feels a bit more varied and local
Cat Ba is also nice if you want to combine the trip with time on the island itself. You can swim, relax, or explore before/after your tour.
However, getting to Cat Ba in peak season (especially summer) can be quite stressful. Traffic around the ferry or cable car can get really busy.
If you’re on a tight schedule or have a flight, this is something to seriously consider.
Departing from Halong Harbor is much more straightforward. Transport is easy, roads are good, and you don’t have to worry about delays.
The route from Halong usually goes through Halong Bay first and then into Lan Ha Bay. It’s more of a classic itinerary, and very reliable
