I’m planning a 2 day cruise in Halong Bay with my family, and one of us is a senior using a wheelchair.
I’m trying to understand how manageable this will be in reality.
A few things I’m concerned about:
- Getting on and off the boat (especially from the pier or tender boat)
- Cabin accessibility (steps, narrow doors, bathrooms)
- Activities like cave visits or island stops
Has anyone done a Halong Bay cruise with a wheelchair user or limited mobility?
Any tips on what to look for when choosing a cruise, or things we should prepare in advance?
Really appreciate any advice!
The biggest challenge was boarding. Most cruises use smaller transfer boats (tender) if you go to Lan Ha or Bai Tu Long. No tender needed for Halong route
try to choose a cruise that departs from Tuan Chau Marina rather than other ports.
Boarding there felt more organized and slightly easier compared to what I’ve seen elsewhere.
consider bringing a lightweight or foldable wheelchair if possible.
Space on boats can be tight, and staff may need to help move it around.
The more compact it is, the easier everything becomes
Look specifically for:
- Wide doorways (both main door and bathroom)
- No raised thresholds at the entrance or inside the cabin
- Flat bathroom floor (no step into the shower)
Some of the newer or higher-end cruises are much better designed for this.
Older boats often have small steps everywhere, which can be quite difficult with a wheelchair.
find a cruise that has lift so wheelchair user can freely go to different decks, rooms, restaurant or even up to sundecks
thank you. Which cruise has lift can you please recommend?
thank you everyone
