Are pearls in Halong Bay real? Where should I buy them?

A friend of mine recently visited Halong Bay and bought some pearls from a stop along the way.
I’m a bit unsure about the quality though. Are pearls in Halong actually real?
And where would be a reliable place to buy them if I want something authentic?
Thanks in advance!

Pearls in Halong Bay are real but mostly not natural in the traditional sense.
They are usually cultured pearls, grown in pearl farms rather than found naturally in the wild.
Natural pearls (100% formed without human intervention) are extremely rare and very expensive

If u r traveling from Hanoi, most buses stop at pearl shops near Tuan Chau for a break.
Those places are more like tourist stops, not necessarily the best place if you're looking for quality pieces

If you go from Hai Phong, you usually won’t stop at those shops at all, straight to the harbor.
So that already avoids a lot of the tourist trap shopping stops

Pearls sold on boats or at tourist spots in the bay are generally cultured pearls as well.
They’re fine as souvenirs or gifts, but I wouldn’t expect top tier jewelry quality.

If you just want something nice to wear or bring home, they’re still a good option.
Just don’t expect them to be rare or investment grade pearls.
